Gracilis – slender, upright, fast to establish

Yes, we do grow running (invasive) bamboo, but we recommend it only for very specific situations. While it has a reputation for being aggressive, running bamboo is a remarkably resilient plant, often hardier and more tolerant of tough conditions than clumping varieties. It's especially valuable in areas with limited water or exposed sites.
However, it must be planted responsibly.
We strongly recommend running bamboo only in fully contained environments, such as large planter boxes, raised beds, or reinforced barriers. In the right setting, it performs exceptionally well and can be managed safely. For most residential gardens, we suggest exploring our range of clumping bamboo, which is non-invasive and easier to control.

A lush bamboo plant certainly makes a beautiful statement and can add a natural, calming element to your home décor. While the idea is appealing, growing bamboo indoors comes with significant challenges.
At Red Cloud Bamboo, we rely on years of nursery experience and advice from plant experts and based on that, we don’t recommend growing bamboo indoors. It’s possible, but success depends on maintaining a very delicate balance of conditions, many of which are difficult to control inside the home.
Here are a few key factors to consider:
Light: Bamboo needs plenty of natural light, but not direct sunlight through glass, which can scorch leaves.
Soil: Requires a well-draining, nutrient-rich mix that holds moisture without becoming soggy.
Watering: A fine balance. Too much water leads to root rot; too little dries the plant out quickly—both are harmful.
Humidity: Bamboo thrives in high humidity, but indoor air in places like Melbourne is typically quite dry.
Air Flow: Fresh, circulating air is essential. An open window nearby helps reduce fungal and pest issues.
Pests: Indoor bamboo is prone to issues like spider mite, scale, and mealy bug, especially in low-airflow environments.
Our Take
While some may enjoy the challenge, bamboo is much happier outdoors in the natural elements. If you're after the look of bamboo inside, consider displaying cut bamboo culms or using images and design elements inspired by bamboo without the maintenance headache.
Bamboo is difficult to propagate because it rarely produces viable seed. Instead, it must be grown through division or culm cuttings, slow, labour-intensive methods that require expertise and time for the plants to establish before sale.
Despite the higher upfront cost, bamboo offers great long-term value. Once planted, it grows rapidly, fills space quickly, and requires little maintenance, making it a smart, lasting investment for your garden or landscape.
